| Outline of Hometown information | カブトガニは古生代（カンブリア紀）に栄えた三葉虫を祖先とする節足動物で、約２億年前からほとんど形状が変わっていない。日本ではかつては瀬戸内海と九州西北海岸に広く生息していたが、環境破壊により生息数・生息地域ともに激減している。笠岡市は国内の代表的な生息地・繁殖地であったが、その笠岡市でも笠岡湾干拓の影響もあって絶滅寸前にまで追い込まれている。 |
