「眉に唾を付ければ、狐や狸などにだまされない」、という俗信から、「だまされないように、欺かれないように用心すること。できすぎている話を疑うこと」という「眉唾（眉に唾を付ける、眉に唾をする、眉に唾を塗る）」という言葉がある。そこから、用心をしなければならない「いかがわしいもの」「真偽のうたがわしいもの」という意味。
